Why do people post low resolution images? I almost find it offensive. I would prefer not to see an image, if it is not made available in high resolution over seeing a great image and realising that this is the full view. If you don't know what you are missing you are not feeling bad about it, while looking at promising thumbnails is quite a torture (for me anyway).
As for what constitutes a reasonable resolution, i would say a minimum in the XGA region (1024x768), 1600x1200 is preferred. Bandwidth shouldn't be an issue nowadays.
Photographers are particularly guilty of posting ridiculously tiny resolution images. Yes, your images gets crispier if you scale it down, but if it looks no good at 1:1 that is your shortcoming. I don't feel comfortable judging from thumbnails.
I don't accept that people are concerned about being ripped. They still slap horrible signatures over their thumb, which should also be banned. Your works is not as worthy of being ripped as you might like to think. And if it is ripped? So what? The greatest form of admiration i say. Are you losing money? Probably not. It is only annoying if someone is claiming credit for your work, or tries to make money with it. But why put all of us through this only because your are timid?
Put your signature in a place where is doesn't contaminate the image at low opacity, and your ownership can be proven.

I say, just take the risk of being ripped (whatever), but do everyone a favour and post your images in as high resolution as possible. Don't be selfish, the benefits will outweigh the cost for sure.

I agree with previous poster. Too big is bad (as far as photography goes). I want to be able to look at the whole photo without scrolling (I hate having browser full screen mode in 1600x1200 resolution). Hence 1024x768 is pretty much maximum size I want to view a photo at. For wallpapers, minimum of 1600x1200 preferably for obvious reasons.
